70 strong extended family helps Matilda celebrate 100 years
St Ives Home Care client Matilda Mackie celebrated her 100th birthday in June with two birthday parties and a letter from the Queen.
Matilda’s extended family of over 70 marked the big occasion with a birthday party at her home and also with a more formal gathering of 100 plus guests at the local sports club, some relatives travelling from around Australia and as far as England.
Matilda, who cites family as one of the big reasons she made her 100th year milestone, has 7 children, 21 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren and relishes the times when they are together.
“I always liked being with my family, and I make sure they always spend time together. They make me live life to the full, and appreciate every day you have as every new day is a good day,” Matilda explained.
Matilda has had her fair share of health scares including a battle with cancer and a stroke. She gets weekly support from St Ives Home Care under a home care package to maintain her home life and help monitor her health needs.
Matilda’s daughter Teresa (pictured right) said the home care package has been the reason her very independent Mum has been able to continue enjoying life at home and would encourage others to see what home care has to offer.
“It’s really a great service. Without it Mum just wouldn’t be able to stay in her home as we couldn’t, even with our big family, provide all the care she needs. The support staff pretty much visit daily and make sure Mum gets the medications she needs and eats regularly, as well providing some personal care,” Theresa explained.
And Matilda’s secret to longevity? Enjoying the small things and being happy is the key.
“A laugh a day keeps the blues away is my motto”, said Matilda.
